Working with academic communities to build scientific understanding

OpenAI announced three more discoveries in math, computer science and physics, this time asking outside experts to act as shepherds who organize groups to understand the results and advise on how each is released.

The announcement comes less than a month after OpenAI's October 6 bulk release of hundreds of math manuscripts. The three results concern harmonic analysis (local smoothing for the Euclidean wave equation), complexity theory (a claim that the Exponential Time Hypothesis is false) and quantum field theory. External shepherds advised a different release strategy for each. The math AI writeup and Lean proof were published on GitHub. The computer science group chose to publish its natural-language proof and Lean formalization immediately. The physics group is holding back the AI artifacts to write the result up itself. Working-group members take part voluntarily, unpaid and independently.
